30th July 1878. Entered the Suez Canal at 6.50p.m. bound for London. Coming through the Red Sea the heat was intense, and two female passengers succumbed to the extreme prostration induced by the heat.
15th August 1878. Arrived off Plymouth on way to London and transshipped to pilot boat ‘Ferret’, No. 7, 20 passengers, who were landed, together with three cases of mails, at the Barbican.
20th September 1878. Arrived in the morning from London, at Plymouth, Captain John Cumming. After embarking several passengers, and the mails she sailed in the evening for Melbourne. She has over 300 passengers on board.

11th November 1882. Arrived at Melbourne with 3600 tons cargo, her draught at water being 25½ft. The once famous passenger steamship is now a sailing vessel, barque rigged. Two deaths occurred during the voyage; a third-class passenger named George Williams died from phthisis, and J. W. Thomas, sail-maker, died from pleurisy. There were also two birth on the passage.
14th January 1885. Was spoken to on the line 24W. On route to New Zealand.
10th May 1887. She was wrecked at Napier. She was lying in the roadstead there when she parted her cables in a great gale and drove ashore to become a total loss. All hands were saved, but a small steamer, the 'Boojum', went to her assistance was capsized with the loss of all but one man.The ‘Northumberland’, Captain Todd, had sailed from Lyttelton for Napier where she was to discharge the balance of her cargo and load frozen meat for London.
February 1931. The wreck of the 'Northumberland' was forced up by a great earthquake into view of those on board the Federal liner 'Northumberland'.
