History:1st April 1854. While being launched gliding into the water the screw steamer ‘Clyde’ was passing by. A collision took place with the latter was sunk. The ‘Gothenburg’ sustained slight damage to her screw.

15th January 1856. Called into Lowestoft, from Grimsby, cast anchor in the roads for about an hour and then sailed for London. Captain Cockburn.

20th March 1873. The steamer has been now for some time in the hands of the contractors for extensive improvements. She is to be raised some eight feet, and given a flush upper deck. The contract for this portion alone has been taken by a Ballarat firm at £10,000.
24th March 1873. The Union Company have nearly completed extensive alterations to the machinery at a total cost of which will be over £1700. Man from the foundry are in Melbourne putting the machinery into the steamer.
23rd April 1873. At Adelaide she was chartered to proceed to Port Darwin.
1st May 1873. After having all her improvements completed at Melbourne, is ready for the New Zealand ports.
10th May 1873. Sailed from Adelaide for Port Darwin.
11th June 1873. Sailed from Port Darwin with fifty passengers. She also had one ton of quartz.

10th February 1875. Arrived at Port Darwin with fifteen passengers.
16th February 1875. Sailed from Port Darwin, Captain Robert George Augustus Pearce.
24th February 1875. On a voyage from Darwin to Melbourne, with 88 passengers and a crew of 37, when she was wrecked in stormy seas; off Old Reef, Finders’ Channel, Great Barrier Reef. 103 died.
26th February 1875. One of the lifeboats was rescued by the ‘Leichhardt’, while the occupants of two other lifeboats that managed to reach Holbourne Island were rescued several days later.
